Wyoming Senior Serrvices and Healthcare Resources

WYOMING SENIOR CITIZENS, INC. (WCSI) founded in 1975 is a private, nonprofit organization whose purpose is to meet the needs of Wyoming's older residents and help them maintain their independence.

The Wyoming Department of Health's Aging Division is committed to providing care, ensuring safety and and promoting independent choices for Wyoming's older adults. The division includes five sections:

The Wyoming Senior Services Section provides many services for older adults. Some are funded through Medicaid, state funding and the federal Older Americans Act. Others are suppored by grants pursued by the division. Available services range from meal programs to home healthcare services.

Wyoming Healthcare Licensing and Surveys helps assure that patients and residents receive quality care from the facilities that require licensing by the State of Wyoming. The office also promotes health and safety through on-site inspections and complaint investigations.

The Wyoming Retirement Center in Basin is a certified long-term, convalescent and respite care facility established to meet the needs of Wyoming's elderly and disabled citizens. A high quality of life and care is the center's goal for each resident.

Assisted living should not be considered as an alternative to a nursing home. The difference between the two is that Assisted Living Facilities or Assisted Living Centers provide a more appropriate way to enhance an individual's life by helping them overcome the daily living limitations. These limitations could include minor physical disabilities, confusion or memory problems that may be hard to for a person to deal with alone.

In some Assisted Living cases, people may have only slight health considerations. However, Assisted Living Facilities typically have additional programs available to accommodate more extensive needs. Assisted Living exists in varying degrees for the purpose of tailoring required services for each person's situation.

The size of Assisted Living Facilities range from small, with as few as five or six residents, to large, full-service apartment complexes. In either case, most residents have the option of eating in a central cafeteria or preparing meals in their own apartment. Residents are also usually encouraged to socialize through meals and regularly scheduled activities.
