Assisted living should not be considered as an alternative to a nursing home. The difference between the two is that Assisted Living Facilities or Assisted Living Centers provide a more appropriate way to enhance an individual's life by helping them overcome the daily limitations. These limitations could include minor physical disabilities, confusion or memory problems that may be hard to for a person to deal with alone.
In some Assisted Living cases, people may have only slight health considerations. However, Assisted Living Facilities typically have additional programs available to accommodate more extensive needs. Assisted Living exists in varying degrees for the purpose of tailoring required services for each person's situation.
The size of Assisted Living Facilities range from small, with as few as five or six residents, to large, full-service apartment complexes. In either case, most residents have the option of eating in a central cafeteria or preparing meals in their own apartment. Residents are also usually encouraged to socialize through meals and regularly scheduled activities.
